Every time you access our secure site, you use SSL authentication. When you buy a product online, the payment page address should start with https://, rather than the normal http://. This signifies that that page is being served securely using SSL, which stands for Secure Socket Layer. When your browser tries to access a secure page, it will first check the site's security certificate. Certificates are awarded to sites by third party providers who perform background checks on the applicants. The certificate is used by your browser to determine that the secure connection is being made with the correct site. If there is a problem with the authenticity, or the certificate has expired, a warning will be given. Certificate verification is just the first part of the SSL handshake, the term used to describe the process by which the browser and server agree an encryption method.
The server sends the browser its public key, which is tied to the certificate and is always the same string. The browser then combines this with a randomly generated string which it returns to the server.Both server and browser now use this string to create session keys that they will use for the rest of the connection to encrypt data. The browser then verifies that it has finished locking its part of the session, and the server reciprocates. The rest of the transmission is now encrypted using the session keys.
This depends on the type of encryption used, which is determined by the browsers capabilities. Modern browsers support 128 bit encryption, which creates 34 followed by 37 zeros different combinations. This is as pretty much close to impossible as codes can get. One method used to break the code is known as a man-in-the-middle attack. This is where an unauthorized script sends its own certificate back to the browser, and fakes the browser's request to the server. Therefore, rather than validating with each other, the browser and server are validating with the unauthorized program. There are 300 billion trillion times as many keys as with 40-bit encryption. It is virtually impossible for an unauthorized party to find the right key, even if they are equipped with the best computers.
